The City of Clewiston Recreation Department hosts a "Beginning" Fish Camp and an "Advanced" Fish Camp over the summer months. The Fish Camp is open to youth from 9-15 years old. Fish Camp lasts 5 days and includes basic skills such as; equipment nomenclature, line selection, knots, casting instruction with push button and spinning reels, lure selection, ecology, fish biology, boat & water safety and stewardship of the environment. Instructors are local fishing guides, local marina owners, fishing club members and recreation staff. Advanced Fish Camp takes place after the initial camp and lasts 5 days as well. Advanced Fish Camp participants must have completed a "Beginning" Fish Camp. Advanced Fish Camp reviews what has been learned in "Beginning" Fish Camp and expands on skills techniques and equipment usage such as; usage of bait casting rods, modification of lures, repairs and maintenance of equipment, cast net usage, live bait usage and care. Each "Advanced" Fish Camp participant will also learn to use a john boat and trolling motor, oars and safety equipment. They will learn about maintenance of boating equipment (trolling motors, props, batteries) and the proper cleaning and storage of equipment (oars, lifejackets, throw cushions, boat hull). "Advanced" Fish Camp participants will also go out onto Lake Okeechobee with a licensed, insured fishing guide to practice their skills.
